Patrick Wojahn: Putting Words Into Action

March 2, 2009

First, I want to thank everyone who came out to the many meetings the city and the County have held over the past few months to discuss the proposed changes to the US 1 Corridor Sector Plan. I think this was a great example of democracy at work – people coming together to bring their ideas to the table and discussing what we want our community to look like. I myself had some of my own ideas going into the discussions, but was able to amend and improve my ideas by listening to the ideas of other residents. Although I was disappointed, as were many residents, at some of the proposals that the County staff came up with during parts of the process, as a whole, I am pleased with what they came up with at the post-charrette meeting in February. I especially want to thank the City planning and development staff, which was present throughout the process and helped us Councilmembers to better understand what was occurring, and the County Park and Planning staff, who spent tireless hours working to incorporate and consolidate all the different proposals and ideas that residents proposed.

The sector plan development process is far from over, and there are still many more opportunities to comment. I plan to continue reaching out to residents and other stakeholders (such as business and commercial property owners) over the months to come to talk about some of the specific proposals and get feedback. Anyone who is interested in seeing what is currently on the table can go to the project’s website at http://www.mncppc.org/cpd/Central_US1/. Although the most recent maps, which were on display at the post-charrette workshop, are not up on the website yet, they should be soon.

Now that we have had the opportunity to get some of our ideas down on paper, we have to start thinking about how to actually implement those ideas. This is the hard part. Implementing the Sector Plan will require cooperation between many different levels of government, from the neighborhood associations all the way up to the federal government. Perhaps most importantly, it will require funds – funds to rebuild roads, development public transit, improve the appearance of our commercial areas, and provide incentives for sensible redevelopment. This need for funds comes at a time when governments at all levels face funding shortfalls, and when many of our residents are facing layoffs and cutbacks, and are themselves strapped for cash. We certainly have many challenges ahead.

Whether or not we can implement the sector plan depends on how we prioritize over the next few years. Although our funds will be limited, we have to find ways to support increased transit and improvements to our neighborhood that will continue to ensure that College Park is a good place to live. I will continue to work with the City staff and other players to find resources – from sources such as federal grants, economic stimulus funds, or developers – to fund these improvements. I hope to work with our County elected officials to work toward implementation of public transit improvements. Collaborative efforts such as the meetings City staff and I have had with representatives of Councilmember Dernoga and Olson’s offices about improving public transit on Route One are key to this effort. Perhaps most importantly, I and other elected officials will rely on continued dialogue with and input from the residents who will be most impacted as we put these changes into effect.

This is a challenge that the whole community will have to work together to confront, but if we do, I believe that the whole area will benefit as a result.

–Patrick
